His statement: وَنَسُوقُ الْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًا ("And We drive the criminals to Hell, thirsty") — Allah, Exalted is His mention, says: We drive those who disbelieved in Allah and committed sins to Hell (jahannam), thirsty (ʿiṭāshan). Al-wird is a verbal noun (maṣdar) from the expression "I came to (waradtu) such-and-such a watering place, I come to it as a coming (wirdan)"; therefore it is not used in the plural, even though it describes a multitude.
The people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke in accordance with what we have said about this.
