Tafseer of Mary · Maryam · 19:7
[He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."

Allah the Exalted says: He sent to him a messenger (basharayā), and said: O Zakariyyā, We give you the glad tidings of the bestowal upon you of a boy (ghulām) named Yaḥyā.
Qatāda used to say: Allah named him Yaḥyā (the one who lives) because He brought him to life through faith (īmān).
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word يَا زَكَرِيَّا إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ اسْمُهُ يَحْيَىٰ : a servant whom Allah brought to life through faith.
His word لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا ("We have not appointed for him before any namesake"): the scholars of tafsīr differed in interpreting this. Some said that the meaning is: a barren woman (ʿāqir) never before bore a child like him.
* Mention of those who said this:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: ʿAbdullāh related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word about Yaḥyā لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا : he said: barren women never before bore a child like him.
Others said: the meaning is rather: We have not appointed for him before any equal.
* Mention of those who said this:
Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā related to us, saying: Abū al-Rabīʿ related to us — both said: Sālim ibn Qutayba related to us, saying: Shuʿba informed us, on the authority of Al-Ḥakam, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا : he said: an equal (shabīhan).
Muhammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and Al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning His word لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا : he said: an equal (mithlan).
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — to the same effect.
Others said: the meaning is that no one before him was called by his name.
* Mention of those who said this:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا : no one before him bore this name.
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا : he said: no one before him bore the name Yaḥyā.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — to the same effect.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam related to us, concerning the word of Allah لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا : he said: no one before him bore this name.
Mūsā related to us, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of Al-Suddī: إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ اسْمُهُ يَحْيَىٰ لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا — no one before him bore the name Yaḥyā.
Abū Jaʿfar said: this view — namely the one which says that Yaḥyā had no namesake before Yaḥyā — is the most fitting interpretation of this. For the meaning of the text is: We have not appointed before, for the boy whom We bestow upon you and who is named Yaḥyā, anyone who was called by his name. The word "al-samiyy" is a fāʿil (active subject) converted to the pattern of mafʿūl (passive subject).
