Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."

His word: يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ ("who shall inherit from me and inherit from the house of Yaʿqūb"): that is to say: who, after my death, shall inherit my property and inherit the prophethood from the house of Yaʿqūb. That is because Zakariyyā belonged to the descendants of Yaʿqūb.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of tafsīr also spoke.

Muhammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and Al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ : he said: his inheritance was knowledge (ʿilm), and Zakariyyā was of the descendants of Yaʿqūb.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid: his inheritance was knowledge, and Zakariyyā was of the descendants of Yaʿqūb.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, on the authority of Al-Ḥasan, concerning His word يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ : he said: his prophethood and his knowledge.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Jābir ibn Nūḥ related to us, on the authority of Mubārak, on the authority of Al-Ḥasan, he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah show mercy to my brother Zakariyyā — what did it matter to him who would inherit his property, when he said: فَهَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ وَلِيًّا يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ ('So grant me from Yourself an heir, who shall inherit from me and inherit from the house of Yaʿqūb')."
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ : Al-Ḥasan used to say: he inherits his prophethood and his knowledge. Qatāda said: it has been mentioned to us "that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, when he recited this verse and reached يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ , used to say: May Allah show mercy to Zakariyyā — what did it matter to him who his heir would be?"
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "May Allah show mercy to Zakariyyā regarding whoever his heirs may be, and may Allah show mercy to Lūṭ — he truly leaned upon a mighty support."
Mūsā related to me, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of Al-Suddī: فَهَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ وَلِيًّا يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ — he said: he inherits my prophethood and the prophethood of the house of Yaʿqūb.
The Qurʾān reciters (qurrāʾ) differed in their reading of His word يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ . The majority of the reciters of Medina, Mecca, and a group from Kūfa read يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ with both verbs in the nominative (rafʿ), with the meaning: "grant me one who shall inherit from me and inherit from the house of Yaʿqūb," whereby "shall inherit from me and inherit from the house of Yaʿqūb" is a qualifying clause to "heir" (walī). A group of reciters from Kūfa and Baṣra read يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثْ with both verbs in the jussive (jazm) as the apodosis of a condition, with the meaning: "grant me from Yourself an heir, then he shall inherit from me when You grant him to me." Those who read it thus said: this is fitting here because "he shall inherit from me" is derived from a verse other than that to which it is appended. They said: such usage is only proper when it is uninterruptedly connected with that which it qualifies, like the word رِدْءًا يُصَدِّقُنِي ('a helper who confirms me').
Abū Jaʿfar said: the most correct of the two readings, in my opinion, is the reading with both verbs in the nominative, as a qualifying clause to "heir," because "heir" (walī) is an indefinite noun, and Zakariyyā asked his Lord to grant him an heir who would possess this quality — as has been transmitted concerning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — and he did not ask for an heir and then report that this would be his quality when he was granted to him, for if that were the case, Zakariyyā would be venturing into the domain of the knowledge of the unseen (ʿilm al-ghayb), which Allah has screened off from His creatures.
His word وَاجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا ("and make him, my Lord, well-pleasing"): that is to say: make, O my Lord, the heir whom You grant me well-pleasing — You will approve of him and Your servants will approve of him in religion (dīn), character, and form. The word "raḍī" is a fāʿil (active subject) converted to the pattern of mafʿūl (passive subject).
