Tabari

Tafseer of Mary · Maryam · 19:49

So when he had left them and those they worshipped other than Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each [of them] We made a prophet.

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: When Ibrāhīm withdrew from his people and from the worship of the idols which they worshipped besides Allah, We dispelled his loneliness after his departure from them and bestowed upon him, in their place, someone better than they and nobler in the sight of Allah than they: We bestowed upon him his son Isḥāq and his grandson Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq. وَكُلا جَعَلْنَا نَبِيًّا (and each of them We made a prophet): he used the singular and did not say "prophets," because of the singular form of the word kull (each, all).
