Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: O my father, do not worship the Shayṭān — verily, the Shayṭān was disobedient to Allah. Al-ʿaṣiyy is the one who possesses much disobedience (ʿiṣyān), just as al-ʿalīm is the one who possesses much knowledge. Some of the Arabic linguists said: al-ʿaṣiyy is the same as al-ʿāṣī, and al-ʿalīm the same as al-ʿālim, and al-ʿarīf the same as al-ʿārif, and they adduced as proof for their position the verse of Ṭarīf ibn Tamīm al-ʿAnbarī:
"Or whenever a tribe appeared at the market of ʿUkāẓ, they would send their ʿarīf to me to inspect me closely."
They said: he said ʿarīfuhum while he meant: ʿārifuhum. And Allah knows best.
