O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."

He says: O my father, I know that if you die while you worship Shayṭān, a punishment (ʿadhāb) from Allah will befall you. فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيًّا (and you will be an ally of Shayṭān): he says: you will become his ally instead of Allah, and Allah will distance Himself from you and you will perish. Fear (al-khawf) here has the meaning of knowing (al-ʿilm), just as al-khashya has the meaning of knowing in His word فَخَشِينَا أَنْ يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَانًا وَكُفْرًا (and we feared that he would overburden them with transgression and disbelief).
