His statement: وَسَلامٌ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ وُلِدَ وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّا — He says: safety from Allah on the day he was born — safety so that the devil would not harm him with what he inflicts upon the sons of Ādam — for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ related that he said: "Every child of Ādam comes on the Day of Resurrection with a sin — except Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyāʾ."
Concerning this, Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib: he said: Ibn al-ʿĀṣ related to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say this.
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement (جَبَّارًا عَصِيًّا): he said: Ibn al-Musayyib used to mention that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no one who meets Allah on the Day of Resurrection but that he has a sin — except Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyāʾ."
[Qatāda] said: Qatāda said: "He never sinned, nor did he ever let his desire incline toward a woman."
His statement (وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ) — He says: safety from Allah the Exalted for him from the trials of the grave and from the terror of the passing. (وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّا) — He says: safety for him from the punishment of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, on the Day of the great terror — that nothing will frighten him, nor will anything disturb him of what disturbs the creation.
Ibn ʿUyayna mentioned concerning this what Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr al-Fayrūzī related to us, saying: Ṣadaqa ibn al-Faḍl informed me, saying: I heard Ibn ʿAṭiyya say: "The creation is most solitary in three situations: on the day it is born and sees itself coming out of what it was in; on the day it dies and sees people it has never seen before; and on the day it is resurrected and sees itself at a tremendous gathering place. Allah honored Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyāʾ therein by sending peace upon him distinctly, and so He said: وَسَلامٌ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ وُلِدَ وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّا ."
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, that al-Ḥasan said: ʿĪsā and Yaḥyā met one another; ʿĪsā said to him: "Ask forgiveness for me — you are better than I." To which the other replied: "Ask forgiveness for me — you are better than I." ʿĪsā said to him: "You are better than I — I wished peace upon myself (I spoke peace over myself) and Allah wished peace upon you" — and, by Allah, he thereby recognized his excellence.
