Tabari

Tafseer of The Night Journey · Al-Israa · 17:94

And what prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them except that they said, "Has Allah sent a human messenger?"

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: What has prevented the polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people, O Muḥammad, from believing in Allah and in that which you have brought them as the truth, wanneer de leiding tot hen is gekomen — that is to say: when the clarification from the side of Allah had come to them concerning the reality of that to which you invite them and the validity of that which you have brought them — nothing but their saying, proceeding from their ignorance: Heeft Allah een mens als boodschapper gezonden? — The first [instance of "that"] stands in the accusative position by being the object of "has prevented," and the second stands in the nominative position because its operation accrues to the verb itself.
