Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."

Allah, great be His praise, says: Say, O Muḥammad, to those who said that they would bring the equivalent of this Qurʾān: Even if mankind and the jinn were to gather together to bring the like of this Qurʾān, they would never be able to match it, even if they supported one another. And it has been mentioned that this verse was sent down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning a group of Jews who had entered into debate with him about the Qurʾān and had asked him to bring another sign confirming his prophethood, because they — by their own claim — had the power to match it.
Account of the narration concerning this: Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Yūnus ibn Bukayr related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, the freed client of Zayd ibn Thābit, related to me, saying: Saʿīd ibn Jubayr or ʿIkrima related to me, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Maḥmūd ibn Sayḥān, ʿUmar ibn Aḍāʾ, Baḥrī ibn ʿAmr, ʿAzīz ibn Abī ʿAzīz, and Salām ibn Mishkam came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "Tell us, O Muḥammad, about what you have brought us — is it the truth from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic? For we do not see it as coherent the way the Torah is coherent." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "Yes, by Allah, you know that it is from Allah; you find it written down with you. And even if mankind and the jinn were to gather together to bring the like of it, they would not be able to bring it." Then they said — that is: Finḥāṣ, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣūriyā, Kinānah ibn Abī al-Ḥuqayq, Ushayʿ, Kaʿb ibn Asad, Samūʾal ibn Zayd, and Jabāl ibn ʿAmr — all together: "O Muḥammad, neither man nor jinn has taught you this." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By Allah, you know that it is from Allah; you find it written down with you in the Torah and the Gospel." They said: "O Muḥammad, Allah does for His messenger, when He sends him, whatever He wills, and can obtain from him whatever He wishes. Bring us a Book that we can read and know, otherwise we will bring you the like of what you bring." Upon this Allah, Mighty and Great, sent down concerning them and concerning what they said: قُل لَّئِنِ ٱجْتَمَعَتِ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يَأْتُوا۟ بِمِثْلِ هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانِ لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِۦ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning His words لَّئِنِ ٱجْتَمَعَتِ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ ... up to His words وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا — he said: "supporter." He said: that is to say: Had the jinn shown themselves and the people aided them, supporting one another — even then they could not have brought the like of this Qurʾān. His words, Mighty and Great: لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِۦ are in the nominative; that is the answer to "la-in" — for when the Arabs answer "la-in" with "lā," they put what follows in the nominative, because "la-in" functions as an oath and the answer to an oath with "lā" is in the nominative; sometimes also in the jussive, because the "in" to which a lām has been added is sometimes answered in that way too — as al-Aʿshā said:
la-in munītu bi-nā ʿan ghibbi maʿrakatin lā tulfinā ʿan dimāʾi al-qawmi nantafilu
[Note of the editors: Ibn Isḥāq mentions in the Sīra the names of the Jewish opponents, but I have not found among them anyone named ʿUmar ibn Aṣān as is in the base text; it is perhaps Nuʿmān ibn Aḍāʾ of the Banū Qaynuqāʿ. This verse is by al-Aʿshā Maymūn ibn Qays; the proof is that the answer to the oath "la-in munītu" is the word "lā tulfinā," which is not strengthened by an emphatic nūn, although it is the answer to an oath — this is permissible when the answer begins with a negation, as Allah says: لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِۦ.]
