Concerning His word إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ (the squanderers were the brothers of the devils): by this He means that those who scatter their wealth in disobedience to Allah and spend it outside of obedience to Him are the allies of the devils. Thus the Arabs say of everyone who follows the custom of a people and treads in their tracks: "he is their brother." وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِرَبِّهِ كَفُورًا — He says: And the devil was ungrateful for the favor of his Lord which He bestowed upon him; he did not acknowledge that favor, but covered it up by neglecting Allah's obedience and committing disobedience to Him. Likewise are his brothers among the sons of Adam — the squanderers of their wealth in disobedience to Allah —: they are not grateful to Allah for His favors to them, but defy His command and disobey Him, and in dealing with the wealth that Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, has allotted to them, they follow his custom of neglecting gratitude for it and receiving it with ingratitude (kufrān).
As the one who related to me — Yūnus, he said: Ibn Wahb informed me, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ : "those who spend in disobedience to Allah" كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِرَبِّهِ كَفُورًا .
