Tafseer of The Bee · An-Nahl · 16:120

Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.

Allah, the Exalted, says: Truly, Ibrāhīm (Abraham), the bosom friend of Allah (khalīl Allāh), was a teacher of good to whom the people of right guidance attached themselves — qānitan (devoutly obedient), that is to say: obedient to Allah. Ḥanīfan: that is to say: standing upright upon the religion of Islam. وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ — Allah says: and he ascribed nothing to Allah as a partner (shirk), and thereby he was not among the confederates of those who practice polytheism against Him. This is a notification from Allah, the Exalted, to those of Quraysh who practice polytheism against Him, that Ibrāhīm is absolved of them and that they are absolved of him.
