Allah, the Exalted, says: And among His favours to you, O people — besides those which He mentioned before this — is that He has made the night and the day subservient to you in alternation, the one for your occupation in seeking your livelihood and the other for your rest therein. وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ (and the sun and the moon) for the determination of the times of your seasons, your months, and your years, as well as for the welfare of your livelihood. وَالنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَاتٍ (and the stars are subservient) to you by the command of Allah — they move in their courses so that you may orient yourselves by them in the darkness of the land and the sea. إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ — Allah, the Exalted, says: Truly, in Allah's making all of this subservient in the manner in which He has made it subservient, there are clear signs for a people who comprehend the proofs of Allah and grasp His admonitions to them.
