Allah, the Exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Say, O Muḥammad, to those who call you a fabricator on account of what you recite to them from the verses of Our Book: "The Holy Spirit (rūḥ al-qudus) has sent it down from my Lord with the Truth." That is to say: say: Jibrīl has brought it from my Lord with the Truth. I have explained the meaning of "rūḥ al-qudus" elsewhere, so that repetition is not necessary. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Wāṣil related to me on the authority of Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn al-ʿUmarī, on the authority of Mūsā ibn ʿUbayda al-Rabadī, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb: he said: Rūḥ al-qudus is Jibrīl. His word لِيُثَبِّتَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا — Allah, the Exalted, says: Say: This Qurʾān — its abrogating and its abrogated verses — the Holy Spirit has caused to descend upon me from my Lord, to strengthen the believers and to fortify their faith (īmān), so that by their affirmation of its abrogating and abrogated verses they may add yet more faith to their faith, and as guidance for them out of error, and as glad tidings (bushrā) for the Muslims who have submitted to the command of Allah, who have followed His command and His prohibition, and who assented to all that He has sent down in the verses of His Book — and they affirmed all of that and believed in it in word and deed.
