Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

His statement إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ (Verily, in that are signs for those who discern keenly). He says: In what We did to the people of Lot — their destruction, and the punishment which We sent down upon them — there are truly signs and indications for those who carefully perceive the signs of Allah and take instruction from His proofs concerning the outcome of the affairs of the disobedient and the unbelievers. By this the Exalted intends the people of the Prophet ﷺ from Quraysh; He says: For your people, O Muḥammad, in the people of Lot — and in how the punishment of Allah befell them when they denied their messenger and persisted in their straying and error — there is a lesson.
In accordance with what We have said concerning the meaning of لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ , the exegetes also spoke.
Mention of who said that:
ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Wāṣil related to me, saying: Yaʿlā ibn ʿUbayd related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān related to us, on the authority of Qays, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning His statement إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — he said: for those who discern keenly (al-mutafarrisīn).
Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: Ibn Fuḍayl related to us, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Malik; and al-Ḥasan al-Zaʿfarānī related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd related to me, saying: ʿAbd al-Malik related to me, on the authority of Qays, on the authority of Mujāhid — إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — he said: for those who discern keenly.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us; and al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to us, saying: Shabāba related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us; and al-Muthanná related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us; and Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: Abū Usāma related to us, saying: Shibl related to us — all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — in accordance with the foregoing.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — he said: al-mutawassimīn are those who discern keenly; he said: I recognized in you the good as a distinguishing trait.
Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān, on the authority of Qays, on the authority of Mujāhid — إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — he said: for those who discern keenly.
Al-Muthanná related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās — إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — he said: for those who behold (al-nāẓirīn).
Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd related to us, on the authority of Juwaybir, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk — لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — he said: for those who behold.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — that is to say: for those who take instruction (al-muʿtabirīn).
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda — concerning لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ — that is to say: for those who take instruction.
Muḥammad ibn ʿUmāra related to me, saying: Ḥasan ibn Mālik related to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Kathīr related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Qays, on the authority of ʿAṭiyya, on the authority of Abū Saʿīd — he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Beware the keen perception (firāsa) of the believer, for he beholds with the light of Allah." Then the Prophet ﷺ recited: إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ .
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Kathīr, the freedman of the Banū Hāshim, related to us, saying: ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Mulāʾī related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭiyya, on the authority of Abū Saʿīd, on the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — in accordance with the foregoing.
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to us, saying: al-Furāt ibn al-Sāʾib related to us, saying: Maymūn ibn Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar — he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Beware the keen perception of the believer, for the believer beholds with the light of Allah and speaks with the divine guidance of Allah."
ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Wāṣil related to us, saying: Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad al-Jarmī related to me, saying: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Wāṣil related to us, saying: Abū Bishr al-Muzallaq related to us, on the authority of Thābit al-Bunānī, on the authority of Anas — he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah has servants who recognize people by keen discernment."
Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ : those who reflect and take instruction, who carefully perceive things, reflect upon them, and draw a lesson from them.
It was related to me from al-Ḥusayn — he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ : he says: for those who behold.
Abū Sharḥabīl al-Ḥimṣī related to me, saying: Sulaymān ibn Salama related to us, saying: al-Muʾammal ibn Saʿīd ibn Yūsuf al-Raḥbī related to us, saying: Abū al-Muʿallā Asad ibn Wadāʿa al-Ṭāʾī related to us, saying: Wahb ibn Munabbih related to us, on the authority of Ṭāwūs ibn Kaysān, on the authority of Thawbān — he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Beware the keen perception of the believer, for he beholds with the light of Allah and speaks with the divine guidance of Allah."
