Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

لَوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلائِكَةِ — they said: why do you not come to us with the angels, as witnesses to the truth of what you claim? إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ — that is to say: if you speak the truth that Allah the Exalted has sent you as a messenger to us and has sent down a Book upon you, then the Lord who did with you what you claim would have no difficulty in sending an angel from among His angels along with you as proof against us and as a sign of your prophethood and the truth of your words. The Arabs use "lawmā" in place of "lawlā" and "lawlā" in place of "lawmā"; likewise the verse of Ibn Muqbil: "Were it not for the modesty and the religion, I would have rebuked you for part of what is in you, now that you criticize me for my shortcoming" — by which he means: "were it not for the modesty."
And similar to what we have said about the meaning of "the reminder" (dhikr) the scholars of tafsīr have said.
