His statement إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ ("Indeed, over My servants you have no authority, except over those of the deviant ones who follow you"): The Exalted — blessed be His remembrance — says: Over My servants you have no proof (ḥujja), except over the one who follows you in that to which you have called him of misguidance — from among those who have gone astray and are lost.
Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Suwayd related to us, saying: Ibn al-Mubārak informed us, on the authority of ʿUbaydullāh ibn Mūhib, who said: Yazīd ibn Qusayṭ related to us, saying: The prophets had places of prayer outside their villages; whenever a prophet wished to consult his Lord about something, he would go out to his place of prayer, pray as much as Allah had prescribed for him, and then ask whatever seemed good to him. So it was that one day a prophet was staying in his place of prayer when the enemy of Allah came upon him and sat down between him and the direction of prayer (qibla). The prophet rendered praise to Allah and said: "I seek my refuge in Allah from the accursed Shayṭān." The enemy of Allah said: "The one in whom you seek protection, that is he." The prophet repeated this three times. Then the enemy of Allah said: "Tell me by what you guard yourself against me." The prophet said: "Rather, tell me by what you overcome the son of Adam" — this twice. Each of them held the other to this. The prophet said: "Indeed, Allah — the Exalted — blessed be His remembrance — says: إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ ." The enemy of Allah said: "This I have already heard before you were born." The prophet said: "And Allah the Exalted says: وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ('And if an incitement from the Shayṭān should incite you, then seek refuge in Allah; indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing'). And by Allah, whenever I perceived you, I sought my refuge in Allah from you." The enemy of Allah said: "In that you speak the truth; by that you guard yourself against me." The prophet said: "Now tell me by what you overcome the son of Adam." He said: "I seize him at the moment of his anger and at the moment of his desire."
