This is a supplication of Ibrāhīm, may the blessings of Allah be upon him, for his parents seeking forgiveness, and a prayer for pardon for them both. Allah the Exalted, however, has informed us that the prayer of Ibrāhīm for forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him; but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he dissociated himself from him; truly, Ibrāhīm was one who sighed much, forbearing .
We have already explained when he dissociated himself from him, in a manner that makes repetition unnecessary.
His word wa-li-al-muʾminīna — He says: and for the believers in You among those who followed me in the religion upon which I am, and who obeyed You in Your command and Your prohibition. His word yawma yaqūmu al-ḥisāb — He means: when the people rise for the Reckoning; and he was content to mention the Reckoning in place of mentioning the people, because the meaning is clear.
