Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

Those who exchanged Allah's favor for unbelief (kufr) set up equals (andādan) for their Lord. "Andād" is the plural of "nidd." I have already explained the meaning of "nidd" earlier with its supporting evidence, in a manner that makes repetition unnecessary. What is meant by this is that they set up associates (shurakāʾ) for Allah.

As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His saying wa-jaʿalū li-Llāhi andādan — "The andād are the associates."

His saying li-yuḍillū ʿan sabīlihi — the Qurʾān-reciters differed over how to read this. Most of the Kufan reciters read it as li-yuḍillū with the meaning: so that they might cause people to stray from the way of Allah through what they did. Most of the Baṣran reciters read it as "li-yaḍillū" with the meaning: so that those who set up equals to Allah might themselves stray from the way of Allah.

His saying qul tamattaʿū — Allah the Exalted says to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Say, O Muḥammad, to them: "Enjoy yourselves in the life of this world" — as a threat (waʿīd) from Allah to them, not as a permission to enjoy, and not as a command to worship, but as a rebuke, a menace, and a warning. This is clarified by His saying fa-inna maṣīrakum ilā al-nār — He says: enjoy yourselves in the life of this world, for it will soon vanish from you; and to the Fire you will go before long, and there you will know the consequences of your enjoyment in the worldly life through your transgressing against Allah and rejecting Him.
