Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted be His mention, reports the words of the messengers to their peoples: وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نَتَوَكَّلَ عَلَى اللَّهِ (And what is there to prevent us from relying upon Allah?) — that is, that we should rely upon Him, upon His protection, and upon His warding you off for our sake; وَقَدْ هَدَانَا سُبُلَنَا (when He has guided us in our ways) — He says: when He has caused us to see the way to deliverance from His chastisement and has made it clear to us; وَلَنَصْبِرَنَّ عَلَىٰ مَا آذَيْتُمُونَا (and we shall surely be patient with the harm you do us) — for the sake of Allah, and with the hardship we endure from you for His sake, on account of our calling you to that to which we call you; namely, the breaking away from the idols and the images, and the pure performance of worship for Him alone. وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ (and upon Allah let those who rely place their reliance) — He says: upon Allah let those of His creation who rely upon Him place their reliance; but as for the one who rejects Him, his ally is the Devil.
