Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allah confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.

Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted be His mention, says: the peoples to whom their messengers came answered their messengers: إِن نَّحْنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ (We are nothing but men like yourselves) — you are right in your word that we are nothing but men like you; we are nothing but men of the sons of Adam, of humankind like you; وَلَـٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ (but Allah bestows His favor upon whom He wills of His servants) — He says: but Allah grants His favor to whom He wills of His creation, so that He guides him aright and assigns him to the truth, and favors him above many of His creation. وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا أَن نَّأْتِيَكُم بِسُلْطَانٍ (and it is not for us to bring you a proof) — He says: it is not for us to bring you an argument and a proof for what we call you to إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ (except by Allah's permission) — He says: except that Allah commands us to do so. وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ (and upon Allah let the believers rely) — He says: upon Allah let those who believe in Him and obey Him put their trust; for we trust in Him and upon Him we rely.
20610m. Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word فَأْتُونَا بِسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِينٍ — he said: "the clear proof" (al-sulṭān al-mubīn) is the proof and the indication. And concerning His word مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ سُلْطَانًا [Sūrah Āl ʿImrān: 151 / Sūrah al-Aʿrāf: 7 / Sūrah al-Ḥajj: 71] — he said: an indication and a proof.
