Tafseer of The Thunder · Ar-Ra'd · 13:20
Those who fulfill the covenant of Allah and do not break the contract,
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: Only those who are admonished and take heed from the signs of Allah are the possessors of understanding — those who fulfill the charge that Allah gave them, (and do not break the covenant) — they do not violate the pledge they gave to Allah by doing the contrary of it, acting upon something other than what He commanded them, and by going to that which He forbade.
We have already set forth the meaning of "the covenant" and "the solemn compact" with their proof-texts, so that there is no need to repeat this here.
The exegetes explained it in accordance with what we said.
Mention of who said that:
20330 — Al-Muthanná related to me and said: Isḥāq related to us and said: Hishām related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda — he said: (Only the possessors of understanding take it to heart) — he made clear who they are and said: (those who fulfill the pledge to Allah and do not break the covenant) — adhere to fulfilling the pledge and do not break this covenant, for Allah the Exalted has most strictly forbidden it and has warned against it again and again in more than twenty places, as counsel to you, as a forceful warning to you, and as proof against you. Truly a matter becomes great by how Allah has made it great in the eyes of the people of comprehension and understanding — so magnify what Allah has magnified. Qatāda said: It was related to us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say in his sermon: "He has no faith (īmān) who has no trustworthiness, and he has no religion who does not keep his pledges."
