The discourse on the explanation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (He said: Do you know what you did with Yūsuf and his brother, when you were ignorant?) (89)
Abū Jaʿfar said: It is mentioned that Yūsuf — Allah's blessings be upon him — when his brothers said to him: (O mighty one — adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with meager merchandise; so give us full measure and be charitable to us; verily, Allah rewards the charitable) — compassion seized him, and he disclosed to them what he had kept hidden from them concerning his affair. As in:
19789 - Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, who said: It was related to me that when they spoke these words to him, his emotion overcame him, his tears flowed as he wept, and he disclosed to them what he had kept hidden from them. He said: (Do you know what you did with Yūsuf and his brother, when you were ignorant?) — and by mentioning his brother he did not mean what he himself had done toward him by holding him back, but he meant the separation they had brought about between him and his brother, when they did with Yūsuf what they had done.
19790 - Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: (And when they entered upon him, they said: O mighty one — adversity has touched us and our family) — the complete verse. He said: Compassion seized him on that occasion toward them, and he said to them: (Do you know what you did with Yūsuf and his brother, when you were ignorant?)

Abū Jaʿfar said: The explanation of the text is: Do you remember what you did with Yūsuf and his brother, when you separated them from one another and did what you did, when you were ignorant? — that is to say: in the state of your ignorance of the consequences of what you did with Yūsuf, and of what his affair and your affair would become.
