Tabari

Tafseer of Joseph · Yusuf · 12:90

قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ يُوسُفُ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ يُوسُفُ وَهَٰذَآ أَخِى ۖ قَدْ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."

    The statement concerning the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: قَالُوا أَئِنَّكَ لأَنْتَ يُوسُفُ قَالَ أَنَا يُوسُفُ وَهَذَا أَخِي قَدْ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّهُ مَنْ يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ (They said: Are you truly Yūsuf? He said: I am Yūsuf, and this is my brother. Allah has indeed shown us favor; verily, whoever fears and patiently endures — Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste) (90)

    Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: The brothers of Yūsuf said to him, when Yūsuf had said that to them: (Are you truly Yūsuf?) — He said: Yes, I am Yūsuf. (and this is my brother; Allah has shown us favor) by bringing us together after you had separated us from one another. (Verily, whoever fears and patiently endures) — He says: whoever fears Allah and is mindful of Him by fulfilling His obligations and avoiding His prohibitions, (and patiently endures) — He says: and restrains his soul and keeps it away from what Allah has forbidden him in word or deed during a trial that has befallen him from Allah. (Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste) — He says: Allah does not nullify the reward of his good deeds and the recompense for his obedience to Him, in what He has commanded him and forbidden him.

    The reciters differed over the recitation of His saying: (Are you truly Yūsuf?).

    The majority of the reciters in the great cities recited it: (a-innaka) — with the interrogative form.

    * * *

    It is mentioned that in the recitation of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb it reads: "awa-anta Yūsufu" — "And are you Yūsuf?"

    * * *

    It has been related from Ibn Muḥaysin that he recited: "innaka la-anta Yūsufu" — as a statement, not as a question.

    * * *

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The correct recitation of this, in our view, is the recitation of the one who recites it as a question, on account of the consensus of the authoritative reciters upon it.

    19791 - Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, who said: When Yūsuf had said that to them — meaning his saying: هَلْ عَلِمْتُمْ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ بِيُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ إِذْ أَنْتُمْ جَاهِلُونَ (Do you know what you did to Yūsuf and his brother, when you were ignorant?) — he drew back the curtain and they recognized him. They said: (Are you truly Yūsuf?) — the complete verse.

    19792 - Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Someone who related to him that he had heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs mention, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his saying: (verily, whoever fears and patiently endures) — he says: whoever fears disobedience to Allah, and exercises patience in the prison.
