Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

When Iṭfīr (the woman's husband) saw the shirt torn from behind, he understood that it was her scheme. (This is indeed of your scheming; truly, your scheming is tremendous.)

19135 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: The witness — meaning: the witness from her family — said: The shirt gives the decisive verdict between the two of them. (If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has spoken the truth and he is one of the liars. And if his shirt is torn from behind, then she has lied and he is one of the truthful. So when he saw his shirt torn from behind, he said: This is indeed of your scheming; truly, your scheming is tremendous.)

Abū Jaʿfar said: The "anna" that introduces the "testimony" (shahāda) has been omitted because the shahāda here has taken on the meaning of "saying" (qawl) — as though it read: "and someone from her family said: If his shirt..." — just as it is said: (Allah enjoins you concerning your children: for the male the like of the portion of two females) [Sūrat al-Nisāʾ: 11], because "waṣiyya" (testament/injunction) there has taken on the meaning of "saying."

His statement فَلَمَّا رَأَى قَمِيصَهُ قُدَّ مِنْ دُبُرٍ is a report about the woman's husband — and he is the one who said to her: "This is of your scheming" — that is to say: of your doing, meaning the doing of women إِنَّ كَيْدَكُنَّ عَظِيمٌ .

It has also been said: it is a report about the witness, that he is the one who said that.

[Footnote 52: See the explanation of "kayd" (scheming) in what preceded, part 15: 558, note 2, and the sources mentioned there.]
