What remains [lawful] from Allah is best for you, if you would be believers. But I am not a guardian over you."

The passage concerning the explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ وَمَا أَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ بِحَفِيظٍ (What Allah leaves you is better for you, if you are believers. And I am not a keeper over you) (86).
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted be His mention, means by His words: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — that which Allah leaves over for you after you have given the people their rights in full in measure and weight with justice, and which He has permitted you — that is better for you than what you retain by short-changing the people in their rights in measure and weight — إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ — that is to say: if you believe the promise and the threat of Allah, and His ḥalāl and His ḥarām.
This is an interpretation that is related from Ibn ʿAbbās by way of a chain of transmission that is not regarded as reliable by the transmitters of traditions.
The exegetes differed about this.
Some said: the meaning is: "Obedience to Allah is better for you."

18478 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of ʿAnbasa, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, on the authority of al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazza, on the authority of Mujāhid: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ — he said: "Obedience to Allah" — خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ .
18479 — Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ — he said: "Obedience to Allah."
18480 — Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Al-Thawrī informed us, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — he said: "Obedience to Allah is better for you."
18481 — Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — he said: "Obedience to Allah."
18482 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — something similar.
And others said: the meaning is: "Your portion from your Lord is better for you."

18484 — Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — he said: "Your portion from Allah is better for you."
And others said: the meaning is: "The provision of Allah is better for you."

And Ibn Zayd said concerning this:
18486 — Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us; Ibn Zayd said concerning His words: بَقِيَّةُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ — he said: "'Destruction' lies in the punishment, and 'that which remains' lies in the mercy."
Abū Jaʿfar said: I have preferred the interpretation that I have preferred, because Allah, exalted be His mention, had beforehand forbidden them from short-changing the people in measure and weight; and it was to the abandonment of giving short measure and short weight that Shuʿayb called them. Therefore it is fitting that this be followed by the announcement concerning what their share is in fulfilling [their obligations] in this world and the Hereafter. Moreover, His word بَقِيَّةُ (that which remains) is a verbal noun from the expression: "such-and-such an amount of something has remained" — so that there is no reason to understand its meaning otherwise than: that which remains, which Allah leaves over for you of what you retain after giving the people their rights in full, is better for you than your retention of the forbidden, which you retain by wronging the people in measure and weight.
And His words: وَمَا أَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ بِحَفِيظٍ — that is to say: "I am not your keeper, O people, who watches over you in your measuring and weighing — whether you give the people their rights in full or short-change them." It is only my duty to convey to you the message of my Lord, and that I have done.
