The statement concerning the explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَذَا إِنَّهُ قَدْ جَاءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ وَإِنَّهُمْ آتِيهِمْ عَذَابٌ غَيْرُ مَرْدُودٍ (O Ibrāhīm, turn away from this; verily, the command of your Lord has come, and there shall strike them a punishment that cannot be repelled) (76).
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted be His mention, speaks by this to report what His messengers said to Ibrāhīm: يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَذَا — this they said to him when he disputed with them concerning the people of Lūṭ. They said: "Abandon the disputation about their affair and the contention therein" — "for قَدْ جَاءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ " — that is to say: the command of your Lord to punish them has come. The word of punishment has taken effect upon them, and the decree to destroy them has run its course. وَإِنَّهُمْ آتِيهِمْ عَذَابٌ غَيْرُ مَرْدُودٍ — that is to say: the people of Lūṭ will be struck by a punishment from Allah that cannot be averted.
And the mention of the narration concerning that which we have stated regarding this, from those who have transmitted it, has already [passed].
