And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone

The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَأَخَذَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا الصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ (67) (And the cry seized those who did wrong, and in the morning they lay collapsed in their dwellings.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says here: Those who did what was not permitted to them — namely the hamstringing of the she-camel of Allah and their disbelief in Him — were seized by الصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ : death struck them down and left them lying motionless in their courtyards (afniyas). As:
18294. Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ — he said: in the morning they lay destroyed.
