And they were [therefore] followed in this world with a curse and [as well] on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, 'Aad denied their Lord; then away with 'Aad, the people of Hud.

The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَأُتْبِعُوا فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَلا إِنَّ عَادًا كَفَرُوا رَبَّهُمْ أَلا بُعْدًا لِعَادٍ قَوْمِ هُودٍ (60) (And they were pursued in this worldly life by a curse, and also on the Day of Resurrection. Behold, ʿĀd rejected their Lord. Away with ʿĀd, the people of Hūd.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says here: The people of Hūd, ʿĀd, were pursued in this worldly life by the wrath and anger of Allah (ghaḍab Allah), and on the Day of Resurrection a similar curse (laʿna) shall pursue them on top of the curse that had already preceded them from Allah in the worldly life. أَلا إِنَّ عَادًا كَفَرُوا رَبَّهُمْ أَلا بُعْدًا لِعَادٍ قَوْمِ هُودٍ — that is to say: Allah has placed them far away from the good.
One says: "kafara fulān rabbahu wa-kafara bi-rabbihi" (so-and-so rejected his Lord and showed disbelief in his Lord), just as one says: "shakarta laka wa-shakartuka" (I rendered you thanks and I rendered you thanks).
It has also been said that the meaning of كَفَرُوا رَبَّهُمْ is: they rejected the favours of their Lord.
