The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا هُودًا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا وَنَجَّيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ (58) (And when Our command concerning the people of Hūd came, We saved Hūd and those who believed with him, through a mercy from Us, and We saved them from a grievous punishment.)

Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted here says: When Our punishment (ʿadhāb) descended upon the people of Hūd, We saved Hūd and those who had believed in Allah along with him from that punishment. بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا — that is: through a favor and mercy from Him toward them. وَنَجَّيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ — that is: We likewise saved them from a grievous punishment on the Day of Resurrection, just as We had saved them in the worldly life from the wrath that We had sent down upon ʿĀd.
