   The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ مَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّي قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلا تَضُرُّونَهُ شَيْئًا إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِيظٌ (57) (And if they turn away, then I have indeed conveyed to you that with which I was sent to you, and my Lord will appoint another people in your place, and you will not harm Him in the least. Truly, my Lord is over all things a Guardian.)

   Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted speaks here, while reporting what Hūd said to his people: فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا — that is: if they turn away and withdraw from that to which I call them, namely the acknowledgment of the oneness of Allah and the abandonment of the worship of the idols — فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ O people مَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكُمْ — for upon the Messenger rests nothing but the conveyance of the message. وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّي قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ — my Lord will destroy you, and my Lord will then appoint in your place another people who acknowledge Him as the One and devote worship purely to Him. وَلا تَضُرُّونَهُ شَيْئًا — that is: you are not able to cause Him any harm, if He wills your destruction or destroys you.

   It has also been said: your destruction does not harm Him when He destroys you; you take nothing away from Him, for it is the same to Him whether you exist or do not exist.

   إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِيظٌ — that is: my Lord is over all creatures a Preserver and All-Knowing. He also says thereby: He is the One who protects me so that you cannot do me any harm.

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ مَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّي قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلا تَضُرُّونَهُ شَيْئًا إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِيظٌ (57) قال أبو جعفر : يقول تعالى ذكره مخبرًا عن قيل هود لقومه: (فإن تولوا) ، يقول: فإن أدبروا معرضين عما أدعوهم إليه من توحيد الله وترك عبادة الأوثان (8) ، (فقد أبلغتكم) أيها القوم ، (ما أرسلت به إليكم) ، وما على الرسول إلا البلاغ ، (ويستخلف ربي قوما غيركم) ، يهلككم ربي، ثم يستبدل ربي منكم قومًا غيركم ، (9) يوحِّدونه ويخلصون له العبادة ، (ولا تضرونه شيئًا ) ، يقول: ولا تقدرون له على ضرّ إذا أراد إهلاككم أو أهلككم. * * * وقد قيل: لا يضره هلاككُم إذا أهلككم ، لا تنقصونه شيئًا ، لأنه سواء عنده كُنتم أو لم تكونوا. * * * ، (إن ربي على كل شيء حفيظ) ، يقول: إن ربي على جميع خلقه ذو حفظ وعلم . (10) يقول: هو الذي يحفظني من أن تنالوني بسوء. --------------------- الهوامش : (8) كان حق الكلام أن يقول : " فإن أدبرتم معرضين عما أدعوكم إليه " ، فهو خطاب من هود لقومه ، أي : " فإن تتولوا " ، وحذف إحدى التاءين . وكأن هذا سهو من أبي جعفر رحمه الله وغفر له.
