The exposition of the interpretation of the words of Allah the Exalted: تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنْبَاءِ الْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَا إِلَيْكَ مَا كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُهَا أَنْتَ وَلا قَوْمُكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ هَذَا فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ الْعَاقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ (49)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: this account which We have related to you, concerning the story of Nūḥ and his tidings and the tidings of his people, مِنْ أَنْبَاءِ الْغَيْبِ — that is to say: it belongs to the tidings of the Unseen, which you did not witness and therefore did not know. نُوحِيهَا إِلَيْكَ — that is to say: We reveal it to you, and inform you of it. مَا كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُهَا أَنْتَ وَلا قَوْمُكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ هَذَا — before this revelation which We reveal to you. فَاصْبِرْ — be patient in fulfilling Allah's command and in conveying His message, and amid what befalls you from the polytheists of your people, just as Nūḥ was patient. إِنَّ الْعَاقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ — that is to say: the good of the outcomes of affairs is for those who fear Allah — those who fulfill His obligations and shun His prohibitions; they are the ones who will succeed in what they hope to attain of felicity in the Hereafter, and victory in the worldly life, just as the final outcome for Nūḥ, when he was patient for Allah's command, was that Allah saved him from destruction together with those who believed in him, granted him in the Hereafter what He granted him of honor, and overwhelmed the deniers and destroyed them all.
And in accordance with what we have said regarding this, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of who said that:
