The exposition of the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: قِيلَ يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (48)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says: O Nūḥ, descend from the ship to the land. بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا — that is to say: with safety from Us for you and for those who are with you, from Our destruction. وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ — that is to say: and with blessings upon you. وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ — that is to say: and upon generations that will come forth from the descendants of those who are with you, from your children. These are the believers from the descendants of Nūḥ for whom Allah had ordained felicity and whom He blessed before they were created in the bellies of their mothers and the loins of their fathers. Then Allah the Exalted informs Nūḥ of what He will do with the wretched ones from his progeny, and says to him: وَأُمَمٌ — that is to say: generations and communities; سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ in the life of this world — that is to say: We shall provide them therein with what they will take as enjoyment until they reach their appointed term; ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ — that is to say: thereafter, when they come to Us, We shall make them taste a painful and agonizing punishment.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of who said that:
18250 — Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: my father related to us, on the authority of Mūsā ibn ʿUbayda, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī: قِيلَ يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ to the end of the verse: "in that peace are included all believing men and women until the Day of Judgment, and in that punishment and that enjoyment are included all unbelieving men and women until the Day of Judgment."
18251 — Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: Abū Dāwūd al-Ḥafrī related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Mūsā ibn ʿUbayda, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī: قِيلَ يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ : "in Islam are included all believing men and women, and in polytheism all unbelieving men and women."
18252 — Al-Muthanná related to me, he said: Suwayd related to us, he said: Ibn al-Mubārak informed us, in a recitation of Ibn Jurayj: وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ — that is to say: of those who were not yet born. Allah had already ordained the blessings for whomever felicity preceded in Allah's knowledge and decree; وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ — of whomever wretchedness preceded in Allah's knowledge and decree.
18253 — Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — identical; except that he said: وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ — the enjoyment of the worldly life, of whomever wretchedness preceded in Allah's knowledge and decree. He said: the children did not perish on the day of the drowning of the people of Nūḥ on account of the sins of their fathers — like birds and wild beasts — but their term had arrived together with the drowning.
18254 — Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ : "they descended while Allah was pleased with them; they descended with peace from Allah. They were people of mercy from the people of that time; thereafter He brought forth from them descendants, generations, of whom some received mercy and of whom some were punished." And he recited: وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ — and the separation of the peoples occurred only from that group which emerged from that water and was safe.
18255 — It was related to me on the authority of Al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Faraj, who said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying, he said: ʿUbayd ibn Sulaymān related to us, he said: I heard Al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His word يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ — the verse: "that is to say: blessings upon you and upon generations of those who were with you and who were not yet born; Allah had already ordained the blessings for them on account of what had preceded for them of felicity in Allah's knowledge. وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ — that is to say: the enjoyment of the worldly life; ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ — on account of what had preceded for them of misfortune in Allah's knowledge."
18256 — Al-Muthanná related to me, he said: Al-Ḥajjāj ibn al-Minhāl related to us, he said: Ḥammād related to us, on the authority of Ḥumayd, on the authority of Al-Ḥasan: that he, when he would recite Sūrat Hūd and arrive at the word يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ until he had completed the verse, Al-Ḥasan would then say: "Allah saved Nūḥ and those who believed, and those given enjoyment perished!" — until he had mentioned the prophets: "with all of them he said: Allah saved him and those given enjoyment perished."
18257 — Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ : "after the mercy."
18258 — Al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd related to us, he said: my father informed me, he said: ʿAbdallāh ibn Shawdhab informed us, he said: I heard Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind transmitting a report on the authority of Al-Ḥasan: that he arrived at this verse اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ , and said: "this was when Allah had raised up ʿĀd and had sent Hūd to them; some believed him and some denied him, until the command of Allah came. When the command of Allah came, Allah saved Hūd and those who believed with him, and Allah destroyed those given enjoyment. Then Allah summoned Thamūd and sent Ṣāliḥ to them; some believed him and some denied him, until the command of Allah came. When the command of Allah came, Allah saved Ṣāliḥ and those who believed with him, and Allah destroyed those given enjoyment." Then he read through the prophets, prophet by prophet, in a similar manner.
