The exposition of the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ مَا لَيْسَ لِي بِهِ عِلْمٌ وَإِلا تَغْفِرْ لِي وَتَرْحَمْنِي أَكُنْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ (47)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted announces to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ what Nūḥ (peace be upon him) did, namely that he turned to Allah in repentance on account of his error — his request which he made to his Lord concerning his son: قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ — that is to say: I take refuge in You, lest I should presume to ask You about that of which I have no knowledge — matters whose knowledge You have kept for Yourself and which You have kept hidden from Your creatures. So forgive me, then, my error in my request to You concerning my son; and if You do not forgive me that and do not show me mercy by saving me from Your wrath, أَكُنْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ — that is to say: then I shall be among those who have wronged themselves and fallen short and who have perished.
