The exposition of the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَقِيلَ يَا أَرْضُ ابْلَعِي مَاءَكِ وَيَا سَمَاءُ أَقْلِعِي وَغِيضَ الْمَاءُ وَقُضِيَ الأَمْرُ وَاسْتَوَتْ عَلَى الْجُودِيِّ وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ (44)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says: after His command had been carried out in the destruction of the people of Nūḥ by the drowning with which He destroyed them, Allah said to the earth: يَا أَرْضُ ابْلَعِي مَاءَكِ — that is: swallow up your water — derived from the expression "the man swallowed such-and-such down his throat" when he gulps it down. وَيَا سَمَاءُ أَقْلِعِي — that is: cease the rain, hold back from it. وَغِيضَ الْمَاءُ — the earth took it into itself and absorbed it. وَقُضِيَ الأَمْرُ — that is: the command of Allah was carried out and it passed with the destruction of the people of Nūḥ. وَاسْتَوَتْ عَلَى الْجُودِيِّ — that is: the ark — "istawat" means that it came to rest — "ʿalā al-Jūdī", and that is a mountain, as is mentioned, in the region of Mosul or the Jazira. وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ — that is: Allah said: may Allah drive far away the unjust people, the disbelievers in Allah from the people of Nūḥ.

As for the resting of the ark upon the Jūdī, according to what the people of the Torah claim: in the seventh month, on the seventeenth night of it. On the first day of the tenth month the mountain tops became visible. Then when forty days had passed, Nūḥ opened the skylight of the ark that he had made in it; then he sent out the raven to scout for him what the water had done, but it did not return to him. Then he sent out the dove; it returned to him, but found no resting place for her legs, and he stretched out his hand to the dove and took her up. Then he waited seven days and sent her out again; she returned at nightfall with an olive leaf in her beak; Nūḥ knew that the water had subsided from the face of the earth. Then he waited seven days and sent her out; she did not return, and Nūḥ knew that the earth had come forth. When the year was completed — the period between the time Allah sent the flood and the time Nūḥ sent out the dove — and one day of the first month of the second year had begun, the face of the earth had dried and the dry land become visible; Nūḥ took the roof off the ark and saw the face of the earth. In the second month of the second year, on the twenty-seventh night of it, it was said to Nūḥ: اهْبِطْ بِسَلامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ."

The children are equal to the birds and the rest of the creatures that Allah drowned without a sin of their own; but their terms had arrived and they died at their appointed times. As for the adult men and women, however: the drowning was for them a punishment from Allah in the worldly life, and thereafter their final destination is the Fire."
