He said, "Allah will only bring it to you if He wills, and you will not cause [Him] failure.

The explanation of the word of Allah the Exalted: قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَأْتِيكُمْ بِهِ اللَّهُ إِنْ شَاءَ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ بِمُعْجِزِينَ (He said: 'Only Allah will bring it to you, if He wills. And you cannot escape Him') (33)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: Nūḥ said to his people when they urged him to hasten the punishment: 'O people, it is not up to me what you seek to hasten of the punishment. That belongs to Allah and to no one else; He is the one who brings it to you if He wills.' ('And you cannot escape Him') — He says: If He wills to punish you, you cannot escape Him by fleeing from Him, for wherever you are, you are within His Kingdom and His dominion and His power. His judgment over you is in force.
