   The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِثْلِهِ مُفْتَرَيَاتٍ وَادْعُوا مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (verse 13)

   (Or do they say: "He has invented it"? Say then: "Bring forth ten sūras like it, as invented pieces, and call upon whomever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful.")

   Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Sufficient proof for the truth of what you have brought them, and sufficient indication of the validity of your prophethood, is this Qurʾān — above all other signs that exist apart from it — since signs that are given to someone serve as proof of his truthfulness only when the entirety of creation is incapable of producing anything like them. And this Qurʾān is something that the entirety of creation is incapable of producing its like. So if they say: "He has invented it" — that is to say: he has fabricated it and concocted it in lies —

   And that the meaning of the word is what we have mentioned is demonstrated by His word: أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ to the end of the verse. Allah the Exalted means by His word أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ: "Or do they say that he has invented it?"

   We have already explained why the Arabs use "am" (أم) in this kind of context.

   Say to them then: let them bring forth ten sūras equivalent to this Qurʾān, as "invented pieces" — that is to say: as fabricated and contrived pieces — if what I have brought you of this Qurʾān is truly invented and were not a miraculous sign, like the other signs that you have asked for, such as the treasure about which you said: "Why has no treasure been sent down to him?" or the angel about which you said: "Why has a warner not come along with him as a confirmer?" For you are my people, and you are among the speakers of my tongue, and I am a man from among you — and it is inconceivable that I alone should be able to invent one hundred and fourteen sūras, while you collectively should be incapable of inventing and fabricating ten sūras like it, especially not when you call to your aid for that anyone you wish among the creatures.

   Allah the Exalted says: Say to them: وَادْعُوا مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ — that is to say: besides Allah — for the forging and fabrication of it, from among the gods that you worship. For if you are incapable of inventing ten sūras like it, then it is as clear to you as day that you are liars in your words: "He has invented it," and then the reality of what I have brought you is confirmed for you — namely that it is from Allah. And it is not permitted for you to demand signs of your own choosing from your Lord, while a proof has already come to you for the truth of what you reject as a lie — that it is from Allah — a proof of the same kind as the proof that you desire and of which you say that you would give it credence when it would come.

   His word إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ belongs to His word فَأْتُوا بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِثْلِهِ. The meaning is: Say: bring forth then ten sūras like it, as invented pieces — if you are truthful in your claim that this Qurʾān was invented by Muhammad — and call to that whomever you can besides Allah, from among the gods and peers that you ascribe to Him.

   18008 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ: "They have indeed said this — قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِثْلِهِ مُفْتَرَيَاتٍ وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُمْ." He said: "Those witnesses will confirm that these sūras are like those." — Thus al-Qāsim mentioned it in his narration.

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِثْلِهِ مُفْتَرَيَاتٍ وَادْعُوا مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (13) قال أبو جعفر: يقول تعالى ذكره لنبيه محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم : كفاك حجةً على حقيقة ما أتيتهم به، ودلالةً على صحة نبوّتك ، هذا القرآن ، من سائر الآيات غيره، إذ كانت الآيات إنما تكون لمن أعطيها دلالة على صدقه، لعجز جميع الخلق عن أن يأتوا بمثلها. وهذا القرآن ، جميع الخلق عَجَزَةٌ عن أن يأتوا بمثله، (1) فان هم قالوا: " افتريته "، أي : اختلقته وتكذَّبته. (2) * * * ، ودلّ على أن معنى الكلام ما ذكرنا ، قوله: (أم يقولون افتراه) إلى آخر الآية. ويعني تعالى ذكره بقوله: (أم يقولون افتراه) ، أي : أيقولون افتراه ؟ * * * ، وقد دللنا على سبب إدخال العرب " أم " في مثل هذا الموضع . (3) * * * ، فقل لهم: يأتوا بعشر سُور مثل هذا القرآن " مفتريات "، يعني مفتعلات مختلقات، إن كان ما أتيتكم به من هذا القرآن مفترًى ، وليس بآية معجزةٍ كسائر ما سُئلته من الآيات، كالكنـز الذي قلتم: هَلا أنـزل عليه ؟ أو الملك الذي قلتم: هلا جاء معه نذيرًا له مصدقًا ! فإنكم قومي ، وأنتم من أهل لساني، وأنا رجل منكم، ومحال أن أقدر أخلق وحدي مائة سورة وأربع عشرة سورة، ولا تقدروا بأجمعكم أن تفتروا وتختلقوا عشر سور مثلها، ولا سيما إذا استعنتم في ذلك بمن شئتم من الخلق. يقول جل ثناؤه: قل لهم: وادعوا من استطعتم أن تدعوهم من دون الله ، يعني سوى الله، لا افتراء ذلك واختلاقه من الآلهة، فإن أنتم لم تقدروا على أن تفتروا عشر سور مثله، فقد تبين لكم أنكم كذبةٌ في قولكم : (افتراه)، وصحّت عندكم حقيقة ما أتيتكم به أنه من عند الله. ولم يكن لكم أن تتخيروا الآيات على ربكم، وقد جاءكم من الحجة على حقيقة ما تكذبون به أنه من عند الله ، مثل الذي تسألون من الحجة وترغبون أنكم تصدِّقون بمجيئها. * * * وقوله: (إن كنتم صادقين)، لقوله: (فأتوا بعشر سور مثله) ، وإنما هو: قل : فأتوا بعشر سور مثله مفتريات ، إن كنتم صادقين أن هذا القرآن افتراه محمد ، وادعوا من استطعتم من دون الله على ذلك ، من الآلهة والأنداد. 18008- حدثنا القاسم قال ، حدثنا الحسين، قال، حدثني حجاج، عن ابن جريح: ( أم يقولون افتراه) ، قد قالوه ، (قل فأتوا بعشر سور مثله مفتريات). وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُمْ ، قال: يشهدون أنها مثله ، هكذا قال القاسم في حديثه.
