And say to those who do not believe, "Work according to your position; indeed, we are working.

The statement concerning the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَقُلْ لِلَّذِينَ لا يُؤْمِنُونَ اعْمَلُوا عَلَى مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنَّا عَامِلُونَ (121)
(And say to those who do not believe: act according to your ability; we too are acting.)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted addresses His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Say, O Muḥammad, to those who do not believe you and do not affirm the oneness of Allah: اعْمَلُوا عَلَى مَكَانَتِكُمْ — that is to say: in your state of repose and fixity, doing what you will do — for we shall act as we shall act upon the deeds that Allah has charged us with. And await what Satan has promised you, for we await what Allah has promised us of armed combat (qitāl) against you and of our victory over you — as in:
