The explanation of the meaning of His word: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ وَمَا لَكُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ ثُمَّ لا تُنْصَرُونَ (113)
(And do not incline toward those who have done wrong, lest the Fire touch you, and you will have no protectors besides Allah; then you will not be aided.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted — blessed be His remembrance — says: Do not incline, O people, toward the words of those who have committed disbelief (kufr) in Allah, so that you accept them and are pleased with their deeds. (Then the Fire will touch you) by what you have done. And you will have no helper besides Allah who helps you, nor a protector (walī) who watches over you. (Then you will not be aided) — that is to say: if you do that, Allah will not grant you aid; rather, He will forsake you of His support and let your enemy prevail over you.

In accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (taʾwīl) also spoke.
Mention of who said that:
18602 — Al-Muthanná related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ — he meant: inclining toward associating partners with Allah (shirk).
18603 — Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: Ibn Yamān related to us, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا — he said: do not be pleased with their deeds.
18604 — Al-Muthanná related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: Ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya, concerning His word: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا — he said: do not be pleased with their deeds. He said: "inclining" (al-rukūn) means: being pleased (al-riḍā).
18605 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya, concerning His word: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا — he said: do not be pleased with their deeds. (Then the Fire will touch you.)
18606 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا — he said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: do not incline toward those who have done wrong.
18607 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ — he said: do not join in associating partners with Allah (shirk), which is that from which you have departed.
18608 — Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: وَلا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ — he said: "inclining" (al-rukūn) is flattery (al-idhān). And he recited: وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ [Surah Al-Qalam (68):9] — he said: you incline toward them, and you do not reject what they have said, while they have said something tremendous in their disbelief (kufr) in Allah, His Book, and His messengers. He said: and this applies only to the people of disbelief (kufr) and the polytheists (mushrikīn), not to the people of Islam. As for the sinners among the people of Islam — Allah knows best their sins and deeds. It does not befit anyone to make peace with any disobedience to Allah, nor to incline toward it.
