The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ وَمَنْ تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلا تَطْغَوْا إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ (So be steadfast as you have been commanded, and those who have turned in repentance with you, and do not transgress the limits; truly, He is All-Seeing of what you do.) (112)

Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Be steadfast, O Muḥammad, in the matter of your Lord, and in the religion with which He has sent you, and in the call to it, as your Lord has commanded you. And: وَمَنْ تَابَ مَعَكَ (and those who have turned in repentance with you) — that is to say: and those who, together with you, have returned to obedience to Allah and to acting upon what his Lord has commanded him, after his unbelief (kufr). And: وَلا تَطْغَوْا (and do not transgress the limits) — that is to say: do not transgress His command by doing what He has forbidden you. And: إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ (truly, He is All-Seeing of what you do) — that is to say: truly, your Lord, O people, is, with respect to everything you perform of deeds — whether that be obedience or disobedience — "All-Seeing" (baṣīr): He has knowledge of it, nothing of it is hidden from Him, and He beholds all of that. Allah the Exalted says by this: Fear Allah, O people, that your Lord is watching over you while you act in contradiction to His command, for He has knowledge of what you do, and He is lying in wait for you.

Ibn ʿUyayna used to say concerning the meaning of the words فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ (so be steadfast as you have been commanded), the following:

18600 — Al-Muthanā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning the words فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ, that he said: "Be steadfast upon the Qurʾān."

18601 — Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning the words وَلا تَطْغَوْا (and do not transgress the limits): "Transgression (ṭughyān) is going against Allah and committing disobedience toward Him. That is the 'transgression' (al-ṭughyān)."
