ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةِ

Which mounts directed at the hearts.

    Then He informed him what it is, and said — exalted be His praise: it is نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ * الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ (the Fire of Allah, kindled, which mounts up over the hearts). He says: that is the Fire whose pain and heat penetrate the hearts; and "ittilāʿ" (penetrating, reaching up to) and "bulūgh" (reaching) can have the same meaning — it has been transmitted from the Arabs that one said: "when did you reach our land?" and "I reached my land," using the word "ṭalaʿa" in the meaning of "to reach."

    ثم أخبره عنها ما هي, فقال جل ثناؤه: هي ( نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ * الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الأفْئِدَةِ ) يقول: التي يطلع ألمها ووهجها القلوب; والاطلاع والبلوغ قد يكونان بمعنى، حُكي عن العرب سماعا: متى طلعت أرضنا; وطلعت أرضي: بلغت.
