His statement: حَتَّى زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ — that is to say: until you went to the graves and were buried therein. In this lies a proof for the soundness of the position concerning the chastisement (ʿadhāb) in the grave, for Allah — exalted be His mention — has reported concerning this people, who were diverted by the rivalry in seeking increase (al-takāthur), that they will come to know what awaits them when they visit the graves — as a warning and a threat from Him against them.

In line with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Ibn ʿAṭiyya related to us, on the authority of Qays, on the authority of Ḥajjāj, on the authority of al-Minhāl, on the authority of Zirr, on the authority of ʿAlī, who said: "We had doubts about the chastisement in the grave, until this verse was revealed: أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ (Al-takāthur has diverted you) … up to: (Nay, you shall come to know) — concerning the chastisement in the grave."

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām ibn Salm related to us, on the authority of ʿAnbasa, on the authority of Ibn Abī Laylā, on the authority of al-Minhāl, on the authority of Zirr, on the authority of ʿAlī, who said: أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ (Al-takāthur has diverted you) was revealed concerning the chastisement in the grave.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr, on the authority of al-Ḥajjāj, on the authority of al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, on the authority of Zirr, on the authority of ʿAlī, who said: "We continued to have doubts about the chastisement in the grave, until there was revealed: أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ * حَتَّى زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ (Al-takāthur has diverted you, until you visited the graves)."
