And indeed, he is to that a witness.

And His word: وَإِنَّهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ
(And indeed He is a witness over that)
The Most High says — blessed be His name — : Allah is a witness to his ingratitude (kunūd) toward his Lord: that is to say, a witness (shāhid).
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) likewise spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda — concerning وَإِنَّهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ — he said: "That is to say: Allah is indeed a witness over that."
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — concerning وَإِنَّهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ — [and he said:] in some readings [it stands]: "Truly, Allah is indeed a witness over that."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān — concerning وَإِنَّهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ — he said: "And truly, Allah is a witness over that."
