Indeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.

And His word: إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ
(Indeed, man is ungrateful to his Lord.)
He says: man is ungrateful for the favors of his Lord. The "kanūd" soil (الأرض الكنود) is the soil that makes nothing sprout. Al-Aʿshā said:
"Give her attention, and she will answer your bond — indeed, she is ungrateful (kanūd) for the bond with the steadfast visitor."
It has also been said: the tribe of Kinda (كندة) is so named because it broke off from its father.
What we have set forth concerning this is also the opinion of the exegetes.

ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Yūsuf al-Jubayrī related to me, he said: Muḥammad ibn Kathīr related to us, he said: Muslim related to us, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his word إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "ungrateful (kafūr)."
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "ungrateful (kafūr) to his Lord."
Abū Kurayb related to us, he said: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "ungrateful."
Ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, he said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid — the same.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid — the same.
Al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — the same.
Abū Kurayb related to us, he said: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Mahdī ibn Maymūn, on the authority of Shuʿayb ibn al-Ḥabḥāb, on the authority of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, concerning إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "He is the ungrateful one (kafūr) who counts the misfortunes and forgets the favors of his Lord."
Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ — he said: "al-Kanūd means: the ungrateful one."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān — he said: al-Ḥasan said: إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — "He says: one who reproaches his Lord, who counts the misfortunes."
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "ungrateful."
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "ungrateful."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda — the same.
Yaḥyā ibn Ḥabīb ibn ʿArabī related to us, he said: Khālid ibn al-Ḥārith related to us, he said: Shuʿba related to us, on the authority of Simāk — who said: Kinda is so named because it broke off from its father. Concerning إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ he said: "ungrateful."
Abū Kurayb related to us, he said: ʿUbayd Allāh related to us, on the authority of Isrāʾīl, on the authority of Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr, on the authority of al-Qāsim, on the authority of Abū Umāma — who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ : "The ungrateful one (kafūr) is the one who eats alone, beats his slave, and refuses to give his gifts."
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "al-Kanūd means: the ungrateful one" — and he recited: إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لَكَفُورٌ .
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh related to us, he said: Abū al-Mughīra ʿAbd al-Quddūs related to us, he said: Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān related to us, he said: Ḥamza ibn Hāniʾ related to me, on the authority of Abū Umāma — that he used to say: "Al-kanūd is the one who alights alone, beats his slave, and refuses to give his gifts."
Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Ṣawwārī related to me, he said: Muḥammad ibn Sawwār related to us, he said: Abū al-Yaqẓān informed us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Hishām, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning His word إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ — he said: "One who reproaches his Lord, who counts the misfortunes and forgets the favors."
