Arriving thereby in the center collectively,

His statement: فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا (and penetrated thereby into the midst of a host)
The Exalted — may His remembrance be exalted — says: with their horses they penetrated into the midst of the assembled army. One says: *wasaṭtu l-qawma* with a light sound (without doubling), *wasaṭtuhu* with a heavy sound (tashdīd), and *tawaṣṣaṭtuhu* — all three with the same meaning.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) likewise spoke.

Yaʿqūb related to me, saying: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, saying: Abū Rajāʾ related to us, saying: ʿIkrima was asked about His statement فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا . He said: "the assembly of the unbelievers."
Hannād ibn al-Sarī related to us, saying: Abū l-Aḥwaṣ related to us, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — he said: "the assembly of the army."
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — he said: "that is the assembly of the army."
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Wāṣil, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — he said: "the assembly of the enemy."
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — he said: "the assembly of these and those."
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — "they penetrated into the midst of the assembly of the army."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — "they penetrated with the army into the midst of the enemy."
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — he said: "they penetrated into the midst of the assembly of the army."
It was related to me, on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, who said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd informed us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His statement فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا : "the assembly — that is the squadron (al-katība)."
Others said: what is meant by فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ is Muzdalifa.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, on the authority of ʿAbdullāh — فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا — he meant: Muzdalifa.
