Stirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,

His statement فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا ("and thereby they raise up a cloud of dust")
The Exalted — praised be His remembrance — says: they raised up dust in the valley. Al-naqʿ means: the dust; it is also said that it is the earth (the sand) itself. The pronoun in His statement "bihī" ("thereby") refers to the name of the place; He refers to it without having mentioned it earlier, because it is self-evident that dust can only rise from a place — so that it is clear to the hearer by means of the meaning, without explicit mention being necessary.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have also spoken.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me; he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us; he said: ʿĪsā related to us — and al-Ḥārith related to me; he said: al-Ḥasan related to us; he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا : he said: "the horses."
Abū Kurayb related to us; he said: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Wāṣil, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ and Ibn Zayd; he said: "al-naqʿ is the dust."
Hannād related to us; he said: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ related to us, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا : he said: "they raised up the dust — that is to say: the horses."
Yaʿqūb related to me; he said: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us; he said: Abū Rajāʾ related to us; he said: ʿIkrima was asked about His statement فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا ; he said: "they made the earth fly up with their hooves."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us; he said: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا : he said: "with their hooves they made the dust of the earth fly up."
Bishr related to us; he said: Yazīd related to us; he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — the same.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us; he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا : he said: "they thereby raised up dust."
Yūnus related to me; he said: Ibn Wahb informed us; he said: Abū Ṣakhr informed me, on the authority of Abū Muʿāwiya al-Bajalī, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: ʿAlī said to me: "the ʿādiyāt ḍabḥan are [the horses that ride] from ʿArafa to Muzdalifa, and from Muzdalifa to Minā; فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا : the earth, when they tread upon it with their soft soles and their hooves."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us; he said: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh, concerning فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا : he said: "when they move forward, they make the earth fly up."
