Then We sent after them Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his establishment with Our signs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people

The explanation of the word of Allah the Exalted: ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ مُوسَى وَهَارُونَ إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَئِهِ بِآيَاتِنَا فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا مُجْرِمِينَ (75)
(Then We sent after them Mūsā and Hārūn to Pharaoh and his courtiers with Our signs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: Then We sent, after these messengers whom We had sent after Nūḥ to their peoples, Mūsā and Hārūn — the sons of ʿImrān — to the Pharaoh of Egypt and his courtiers, that is: the nobles of his people and their leaders, with Our signs — that is: with Our proofs for the reality of that to which they were calling them: submission to Allah in worship (ʿubūda), and the acknowledgement of their messengership —, but they behaved arrogantly, that is: they exalted themselves in arrogance above the acknowledgement of that to which Mūsā and Hārūn were calling them, and were a criminal people, that is: sinners against their Lord, on account of their disbelief (kufr) in Allah.
