The exposition of the explanation of His statement, exalted is He:
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ فِي الْفُلْكِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ خَلائِفَ وَأَغْرَقْنَا الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا فَانْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ
(But they denied him, so We saved him and those who were with him in the ark, and We made them successors, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. So see how was the end of those who had been warned.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: He, exalted is His mention, says: the people of Nūḥ denied him in that which he informed them on behalf of Allah concerning the message and the revelation. "So We saved him and those who were with him" — among those who were carried along with him — "in the ark," that is to say: in the ship. "And We made them successors," He says: and We made those whom We saved with Nūḥ in the ship successors upon the earth over his people who had denied him, after We had drowned those who denied Our signs — that is to say: Our proofs and evidences for Our oneness, and the message of Our messenger Nūḥ.
Allah says to His Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "So see" — O Muḥammad — "how was the end of those who had been warned," and they are those whom Nūḥ warned of the punishment of Allah on account of their denial of him and their worship of the idols. He, exalted is His praise, says to him: see what their denial of their messenger brought upon them as a consequence, for the end of those among your people who deny you — if they persist in their unbelief and their rebellion against their Lord — will be like that which was the end of the people of Nūḥ when they denied him.
He, exalted is His praise, says: so let them beware lest there befall them that which befell them, if they do not repent.
