Tabari

Tafseer of Jonas · Yunus · 10:72

And if you turn away [from my advice] then no payment have I asked of you. My reward is only from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of the Muslims."

The exposition of the interpretation of the word of Allah the Exalted: (72) (If you turn away, I have asked you for no reward; my reward rests only with Allah. And I have been commanded to be among the Muslims.)

Allah — exalted is His remembrance — says, reporting what His prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) said to his people: فَإِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ — "If you turn away" — O people, from me, after I have called you and conveyed to you the message of my Lord, turning away from me, and you have turned away from that to which I called you of the truth, the acknowledgement of the oneness of Allah, the sincere devotion of worship to Him, and the abandonment of associating partners with the gods in His worship (shirk) — then that is a negligence on your part and a falling short in the obligatory rights of Allah due upon you, and it is no fault of mine. For I have not asked you for any reward for that to which I called you, nor any compensation that I would receive from you in exchange for your answering me regarding what I called you to of the truth and the guidance; and I have not sought from you for that any reward or recompense.

إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلا عَلَى اللَّهِ — "My reward rests only with Allah" — Allah — glorious is His praise — says: My recompense, the reward for my work and its equivalent, rest only with my Lord, not with you, O people, nor with any other than you.

وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ — "And I have been commanded to be among the Muslims" — my Lord has commanded me to be among those who submit themselves to Him in obedience, who follow His command and His prohibition, and who humble themselves before Him. And for that reason I call you to Him, and I command you, by His command, to abandon the worship of the idols.
