The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَلا تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لا يَنْفَعُكَ وَلا يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ (106) (And do not call upon, besides Allah, that which neither benefits you nor harms you; for if you do, then indeed you would be among the wrongdoers.)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says: Do not call upon, besides your Object of Worship and your Creator, O Muḥammad, anything that brings you no benefit whatsoever in the worldly life nor in the Hereafter, and that likewise brings you no harm whatsoever in religion or worldly life — by this He means the gods and the idols. He says: Do not venerate them in hope of their benefit or out of fear of their harm, for they bring neither benefit nor harm. "For if you do" — that is: if you call upon them besides Allah — "then you would be among the wrongdoers (al-ẓālimīn)": He says: among the polytheists (mushrikīn) who ascribe partners to Allah (shirk), the wrongdoers against themselves.
