Tabari

Tafseer of Jonas · Yunus · 10:107

And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful

The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: (107) (And if Allah touches you with affliction, there is none who can remove it except Him; and if He intends good for you, there is none who can repel His bounty. He causes it to befall whom He wills of His servants, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.)

Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says to His Prophet: "And if Allah touches you, O Muḥammad, with hardship or trial, there is none who can remove it except your Lord who afflicted you with it — not the gods and rivals (al-āliha wa-l-andād) whom these polytheists (mushrikīn) worship. And if He intends good for you, that is to say: if your Lord intends for you prosperity, favor, well-being, and joy, there is none who can repel His bounty, that is to say: there is none who is able to come between you and that, nor to hold you back from it, nor to deprive you of it — for He is the One in whose hand lie happiness and affliction, and not the gods and idols, nor anything other than Him. He causes it to befall whom He wills, that is to say: your Lord, O Muḥammad, causes prosperity and trial, joy and affliction to befall whom He wills and intends of His servants. And He is the Forgiving — toward the sins of whoever of His servants repents and turns away from his unbelief (kufr) and from ascribing partners to Allah (shirk) to belief in Him and obedience to Him. The Merciful — toward whoever of them believes in Him and obeys Him, in that He does not punish him after repentance and turning back."
